Comharchumann na nOileán Beag, the Donegal small islands co-op, has just started a research project into island placenames (logainmneacha).
The project is being administered by Máirín Uí Fhearraigh, the Co-op Manager and the Co-op Committee hope that the work will result in a booklet being published on island placenames later in the year.
The project will cover the following islands:
Inishkeeragh, Inishfree, and Rutland in the Rosses, Gola Island and Inish Shirrer in Gweedore, Inishbofin in Cloich Cheann Fhaola Parish and Island Roy in Mulroy Bay, Downings.
It is intended that the placesnames will be accompanied by maps of the islands as well as pictures depicting certain placenames on the different islands.
This project is a major piece of research that has just started and will hopefully be concluded by the end of the summer 2010.
